Case Study 1

Global Security & Automation Brand

Overview

A major global security and automation brand engaged Eight Development to modernise their legacy push-button and resistive Touchscreen interfaces. They provided us with protocol documentation and a sample device, enabling Eight to design a new 7” slimline capacitive Touchscreen fully compatible with their proprietary bus system.

We later extended the range with a 5” version designed for both landscape and portrait orientation, and updated both units to support the Customer’s new generation of alarm controllers.

Customer Challenge

This brand was facing significant market share decline across Australia and New Zealand. They were losing market share in the Australasian market to a number of competitors. Previously one of the largest suppliers in the ANZ market, this Customer had fallen behind in their product offering. Furthermore, this Customer did not have any resources to address the drop in sales, and were already losing in excess of 10% market share PA. One of the main reasons was the limited range of keypads (at that time there were two), and in particular, end users were requesting Touchscreens.

They lacked internal engineering resources to redesign their offering, and even with additional staffing, their strict development processes meant it would take years to produce an equivalent product—time they did not have.

Eight Development's Solution

Eight developed a fully integrated 7” HD Touchscreen, followed by a 5” model, both engineered to work seamlessly with their existing security controller protocols.

Initial prototypes were created locally by one of the Customer’s distributors (which later became part of Eight Development). After customer testing and extensive feedback cycles, the final units were accepted for production.

In 2014, the industry’s first HD 7” Touchscreen of this type was released under the customer’s brand name.

Since launch, thousands of units have been deployed. The introduction of the smaller 5” Touchscreen broadened product appeal and remains a popular option today. This modernised Touchscreen range played a major role in helping the brand regain competitiveness in key ANZ markets.
