Case Study | Security Alarm Touchscreen Platform

A global security brand partnered with Eight to replace legacy alarm keypads with a modern capacitive touchscreen interface for next-generation systems.

Overview

A major global security and automation brand partnered with Eight Development to deliver a security alarm touchscreen platform designed to replace legacy push-button and resistive interfaces. The objective was to modernise the user experience, expand the product range, and restore competitiveness in key ANZ markets.

The customer provided protocol documentation and a sample device, enabling Eight Development to engineer a new 7” slimline capacitive touchscreen fully compatible with their proprietary alarm bus system. The new security alarm touchscreen platform was designed to integrate seamlessly with existing controllers while delivering a significantly improved user experience.

Following the successful launch of the 7” model, Eight Development later extended the platform with a 5” version designed to support both landscape and portrait orientation. Both units were subsequently updated to support the customer’s next-generation alarm controllers, ensuring long-term compatibility and lifecycle continuity.

This scalable platform approach allowed the customer to introduce a modern touchscreen range without redesigning their underlying system architecture.

Customer Challenge

At the time, the brand was facing significant market share decline across Australia and New Zealand. Previously one of the largest suppliers in the ANZ security market, the customer had fallen behind competitors due to an ageing product offering.

One of the key issues was the limited range of keypads. The customer offered only two legacy keypad options, while competitors had begun introducing modern touchscreen interfaces. End users were increasingly requesting touchscreen-based alarm interfaces, and the lack of a modern solution contributed to declining sales.

Additional challenges included:

• Limited internal engineering resources
• Legacy push-button and resistive keypad architecture
• Increasing demand for modern touchscreen interfaces
• Long internal development timelines
• Loss of market share exceeding 10% per year
• Need to maintain compatibility with existing controllers

Even with additional staffing, the customer’s strict development processes meant it would take years to produce an equivalent touchscreen solution. They required an engineering partner capable of delivering a security alarm touchscreen platform quickly and reliably.

Eight Development's Solution

Eight Development designed and developed a fully integrated 7” HD security alarm touchscreen platform engineered to work seamlessly with the customer’s existing controller protocols. The new interface modernised the user experience while maintaining full system compatibility.

Initial prototypes were created locally by one of the customer’s distributors, which later became part of Eight Development. Following extensive customer testing and feedback cycles, the final design was accepted for production.

In 2014, the industry’s first HD 7” touchscreen of this type was released under the customer’s brand name. The introduction of this security alarm touchscreen platform significantly improved the product offering and enabled the brand to compete more effectively in the market.

Following the success of the 7” model, Eight Development introduced a 5” touchscreen variant. The smaller form factor broadened product appeal and provided additional installation flexibility. Support for both landscape and portrait orientations further enhanced usability across different applications.

Both touchscreen models were later updated to support the customer’s next-generation alarm controllers. This ensured long-term platform viability and allowed the customer to maintain continuity across product generations.

Key Results

The introduction of the security alarm touchscreen platform delivered immediate improvements in competitiveness and product positioning. The modern touchscreen range replaced legacy keypad architecture and provided customers with a more intuitive and visually advanced interface.

Key outcomes included:

• Successfully replaced legacy push-button keypad architecture
• Introduced the industry’s first HD 7” alarm touchscreen for this platform
• Expanded product range with 5” touchscreen model
• Thousands of units deployed globally
• Restored competitiveness in ANZ security markets
• Maintained compatibility with existing alarm controllers

This security alarm touchscreen platform enabled the customer to modernise their interface offering, regain competitiveness, and deliver a scalable touchscreen solution for future product generations.
